The Young Professionals (YPs) programme is KIPPRA’s flagship capacity building programme targeting officers in the public and private sectors. Every year, the Institute recruits 10 to 12 officers from the government and private sector for the one-year training programme. However, increasing demand saw the admission of 14 officers in the just-ended financial year (2018/2019).
Among research the YPs undertook include a joint project titled “Understanding national polices and development goals – analysis of Kenya Vision 2030, Big Four Agenda and Fiscal Budget 2018/19″.
During the programme, the officers underwent rigorous training in public policy analysis and formulation through hands-on training. The courses offered include: public policy process, research methodology, applied econometrics, government operations and training on the KIPPRA-Treasury Macro Model (KTMM) to quip the learners with macroeconomic tools of analysis and forecasting.
To put into practice the knowledge acquired, the YPs write blogs and undertake research and analysis in various topis and with a view of authoring discussion papers. The 2018/2019 cohort focused on research titled: “Improving Productivity for the Informal Sector in Kenya: Bridging the Gaps”.
Upon graduation, they return to their duty stations where they are expected to play a key role in policy formulation.
