The 4th Youth Symposium on Climate Action

The 4th Youth Symposium on Climate Action, themed “Empowering Youth with Jobs for Climate Resilience,” convened on October 22, 2024, showcasing young leaders in climate innovation and resilience. Hosted by the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA), the symposium brought together youth-driven initiatives, global representatives, and thought leaders in climate action to discuss pathways for creating climate-resilient job opportunities for the next generation.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Josiah Moriasi, CEO of the Youth Development Enterprises Fund, alongside notable dignitaries, including H.E. Danny RayDiansyah, Deputy Permanent Representative for UNEP and UN-Habitat, SDEP Director Mr. Timothy Gakuu, Ms. Damaris Mungai from UNEP, and H.E. Sultan Hajiyev, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kenya. The speakers lauded KIPPRA’s efforts, especially the Youth in Climate Action initiative, as essential groundwork for the youth’s preparation for COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

A highlight of the symposium was the launch of the Capacity Building Climate Change Action Fellowship Programme, aimed at equipping young people with the skills needed to lead sustainable initiatives.

Discussions spotlighted Climate-Smart Agriculture, with Ms. Irene Kagera from Gatanga Young Digital Farmers sharing insights on sustainable farming practices that protect ecosystems while enhancing productivity. In parallel sessions, Ms. Susan Wairimu of Africa Women Agribusiness Network (AWAN) discussed “Action for Climate Empowerment,” emphasizing educational approaches for youth in climate solutions. Meanwhile, Ms. Miftah Idris from the Alliance of Climate Frontline Communities introduced “Green Technologies, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship,” inspiring young entrepreneurs to explore sustainable business ideas for a green economy.

Through engaging discussions and new initiatives, the symposium underscored the vital role of youth in climate resilience and the promise of innovative, green jobs to drive sustainable development.
