Prof. Mukras receives Elder of the Burning Spear award
KIPPRA hosted the former Board Chairman Prof. Mohammed Mukras for a presentation of the Elder of Burning Spear (EBS) decoration awarded to him by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The award was given to Prof. Mukras in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the nation, especially in academia.
Before the award presentation and cake sharing, KIPPRA Executive Director Dr Rose Ngugi, who was Prof. Mukras’ student at the University of Nairobi, shared pleasant memories of her interaction with the professor. She particularly recalled how Prof. Mukras’ insistence on fairness in the award of scholarships earned her and a number of her classmates masters scholarships.
In his speech, Prof Mukras expressed his gratitude to the president for the award, saying it made him look back and take stock of his many achievements that might have contributed to the recognition. He then went ahead to enumerate some of them, including the many economics books he had published since he finished his PhD at the University of Toronto in 1976.
Prof. Mukras also named some of the organizations in which he had played a key role, including the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), Industrial and the Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) and the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). He, however, noted that his association with KIPPRA had opened many doors for him, adding that the institute was well known regionally and internationally.
Prof. Mukras said KIPPRA’s ranking as the top think tank in Sub-Saharan Africa for three consecutive years was very commendable. He urged KIPPRA staff to work hard to remain on top, noting that it was more challenging to retain the top spot. The professor, however, expressed optimism that with Dr Ngugi’s leadership, KIPPRA was sure to soar higher.
The ceremony, which took place on 8th November, 2017, ended with a cake-cutting and award of the EBS decoration by Dr Ngugi.
