KIPPRA Held a Workshop to Disseminate Findings of a Study on Youth Employment

KIPPRA held dissemination workshop on Youth Employment through Industries Without Smokestacks (IWOSS) on 27th July 2021. The purpose of the workshop was to share the Kenya case study findings to enable maximum policy uptake and impact and provide a platform for stakeholders to engage in policy discourse. The event was graced by Chief Administrative Secretary, The National Treasury and Planning Hon Eric Wafukho , KIPPRA Board Vice-Chairperson Mr Koitamet Olekina and KIPPRA Executive Director Dr Rose Ngugi.

Industries Without Smokestacks have similar characteristics with manufacturing in terms of productivity and potential to create decent jobs. They include agro-processing, financial services, horticulture, ICT, tourism, transit trade and wholesale trade. KIPPRA undertook this research in collaboration with The Brookings Institution.

CAS The National Treasury and Planning Hon Eric Wafukho in his address noted that the findings and recommendations from the research will go along way in advising the government and providing policy options to generate jobs for youth. KIPPRA Executive Director Dr Rose Ngugi in her speech lauded the long-standing partnership with Brookings Institution, which she said was initiated by KIPPRA’s founding Executive Director the late Prof. Mwangi Kimenyi. She said KIPPRA and Brookings Institution are among global think tanks ranked annually in the Go-To Think Tanks Report where they each perform well. In the 2021 report, Brookings Institution was number one globally while KIPPRA came second in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the national and county governments, development partners, civil society organizations, international regional and Kenya think tanks and organizations representing the IWOSS sectors.
