Validation Workshop for Nine Gender-Related Research Papers
Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) held a stakeholder validation workshop on 6th May 2019 at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi. The objective of the workshop was to share the preliminary results of the research that has been running for the past 10 months under the theme: A Gendered Approach to Unlocking the Potential for Sustainable Development. This will be the theme of the 2nd Annual Regional Conference to be held in June 2019.
During the workshop, KIPPRA-wide survey committee members presented nine research papers covering the following topical areas:
- Gender Policies laws and regulations
- Gender in leadership, voice and urgency
- Gender and access to productive agricultural assets
- Gender and access to entrepreneurship opportunities
- Gender and wage differentials
- Gender and housing
- Gender and trade opportunities
- Gender and access to healthcare services including the Linda Mama Program
- Gender-based violence and access to education
The event was graced with multi-sectorial institutions, including the State Department for Gender Affairs, UN-Women, Tegemeo Institute, University of Nairobi, Agriculture Finance Corporation and other players in the transport, housing, labour, trade and health sectors in a bid to help the KIPPRA research team sharpen their findings and validate the results.
Speaking during the workshop, a representative from UN-Women noted that gender equality in all spaces is fundamental in promoting economic development that is inclusive and accessible to all Kenyans, including persons with disabilities, older members of society, pregnant mothers and little children.
Participants gave many other valuable suggestions and comments towards improving all the research topics, but the underlying message was that no one should be left behind in the quest for economic growth and shared prosperity.
The research team will continue to develop the papers in readiness for presentation during the upcoming conference where dialogue on gender and development will take place. External papers on gender will also be presented.
