From 21-26 March 2013, the African Union (AU) will host the 6th Joint Annual Meetings with a conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance and a conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) at the Sofitel Hotel Ivoire, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The AU and ECA organizers have approved four technical events to precede the ministerial meetings (25-26 March). One of these events will focus on Africa's demographic dividend (March 24) and is organized by the African Centre for Gender and Social Development at ECA, the Gates Institute - Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and co-sponsored by the Kenya Institute for Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) http://www.kippra.org/). The event will have a panel of African policy makers, together with the United Nations Population Fund Executive Director and the African Development Bank's President. The meeting will continue during the day to drill more deeply into the meaning of the demographic dividend and how Africans could take advantage of the demographic change, with presentations by the NTA network and the World Bank.
In parallel to the ministerial meetings, KIPPRA and the NTA network will hold a separate workshop, "Shedding Light on the Demographic Dividend in Africa using National Transfer Accounts (NTA)", on 25-26 March at the Pullman Abidjan Hotel to develop a proposal on the interaction of population and labour in Africa. This event is co-sponsored by the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis with support from the International Development Research Centre, and the National Transfer Account Project, Centre for Economics and Development, University of California and Berkeley and the East-West Centre. The IDRC funded the initial phase of the NTA Africa to join the Global NTA network (http://www.ntaccounts.org/web/nta/show). KIPPRA is part of IDRC's Think Tank Initiative (www.idrc.ca/thinktank).
